Adobe Photoshop for FDE’s With an Emphasis on EDD Imaging
D/Lt. Mark Goff, Michigan State Police, 7320 North Canal Road, Lansing MI 48821

This half day workshop is designed specifically for forensic document examiners. The presenter will demonstrate how Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Bridge can be used to streamline the FDE’s work processes, aid in visual comparisons and create appealing demonstratives. The workshop is structured to accommodate attendees with little to no experience with Photoshop and Bridge and will be presented in the following format:
Introduction to Adobe Bridge: Workshop attendees will be introduced to a digital asset management application designed for organizing and reviewing images. This program can be configured to work as a digital workspace similar to Windows File Explorer, with greater flexibility for image management. Adobe Bridge also has significant integration with Adobe Photoshop allowing the user to easily switch between them and perform limited Photoshop functions in Bridge.
Introduction to Adobe Photoshop: Workshop attendees will be introduced to multiple aspects of Adobe Photoshop including; recommended settings, basic operation, batch image processing and 1 click actions for repetitive tasks. There will be additional instruction using Adobe Photoshop and Photoshop integration with Bridge in building writing comparison charts for various types of writing samples.
Image Overlay Techniques: Workshop attendees will learn how to use layered images of signatures, writing, printing and impressions to demonstrate varying significance of correspondence documents in form or location. These techniques can be used to show association of writing to developed EDD impressions, signature tracing or copy/paste, or differentiation of document elements that are characteristic of alteration including spacing and alignment. Using similar image layering techniques, the workshop attendees will learn an easy method for demonstrating different signature segments within a signature.
Digital images will be provided for practical exercises associated with each block of instruction. As a skills workshop, emphasis will be placed on using hands-on examples to ensure these techniques can be used outside of this workshop setting. Workshop participants should have access to a computer with Adobe Photoshop CS3, and Bridge CS3, or higher, installed to complete the hands-on examples, but this is not required for attendance. A mouse is also recommended over a touchpad for this workshop.
